Six-year-old Success Ezenwafor, a pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School, has been laid to rest after he was swept away by floodwaters in Awka, Anambra State.
Success was among schoolchildren travelling in a shuttle bus when the vehicle became trapped in floodwaters along the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka South Local Government Area on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
Nine other occupants of the vehicle, including seven pupils and two adults, were rescued and taken to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, for treatment.
However, Success remained missing after the incident.
A search operation involving security personnel, local residents and other responders was launched to locate him. His body was eventually recovered the following day.
According to reports, the remains of the young pupil were taken to his hometown in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area, where he was buried on Wednesday, September 23.

The tragedy has left the boy’s family and those who knew him devastated.
A family member said Success had kissed his father goodbye before leaving home for school that morning, unaware that it would be their final farewell.
The Awka South Local Government Chairman, Chinedu Okafor, expressed condolences to the Ezenwafor family and urged residents to exercise extreme caution during heavy rainfall and flooding.
The incident has also renewed concerns about the dangers posed by flooding in parts of Anambra, particularly to children and commuters travelling through flood-prone areas.
