The North-Central Indigenous Youth Council has called for a transparent investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State.
The miners were reportedly arrested during operations against illegal mining in the state on September 15 and 16 before their deaths in NSCDC custody.
In a statement signed by the council’s Chairman, Board of Trustees, Dr JM Abbah, the group expressed shock over the incident and raised concerns about alleged negligence, overcrowding and violations of custodial standards.
The council also questioned the initial explanation of a suspected disease outbreak, calling for an independent forensic autopsy to establish the actual cause of death and prosecution of any officers found culpable.

The group commended Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago for ordering an independent committee of inquiry and forensic examinations, as well as declaring a three-day mourning period.
It also praised the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for ordering the suspension of the Niger State NSCDC Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, and calling for a transparent investigation.
The council urged the Federal Government to strengthen oversight of mining-related arrests, establish safer detention standards and introduce stronger measures against illegal mining sponsors and buyers.
It further appealed for calm among youths in Minna and the wider North-Central region, while insisting that the final autopsy findings should be made public and that justice should be served.
