No fewer than eight Nigerian soldiers have reportedly lost their lives following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Borno State.
The tragic incident occurred along a military supply route as troops attached to the 24 Task Force Brigade in Dikwa were returning to their base from Maiduguri after escorting food items and other logistics.
According to sources within the military, the convoy encountered the explosion when the lead vehicle—a gun truck—ran over an IED suspected to have been planted by insurgents linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
“All the soldiers in the leading vehicle died instantly. About eight personnel were affected,” a source disclosed.
As of the time of filing this report, the identities and ranks of the deceased soldiers have not been officially confirmed.

The attack highlights the growing threat posed by insurgent groups in Nigeria’s North-East, particularly their increasing reliance on roadside explosives targeting military movements and supply chains.
Security analysts note that insurgents have shifted tactics in recent months, focusing more on ambushes and IED attacks along key routes connecting Maiduguri, Dikwa, Bama, and surrounding local government areas.
This latest incident adds to a series of similar attacks in the region. In June, three soldiers were killed and several others injured after their vehicle struck an IED along the Marte–Dikwa road.
Earlier in April 2025, at least four soldiers were killed in an ambush within the same axis, with military trucks set ablaze.
The Nigerian military continues to intensify efforts to secure supply routes and curb insurgent activities in the region.
