The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has initiated plans for a peaceful protest following the controversial remand of the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), James Adio.
In a statement released on Monday, NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde, condemned the development, describing it as a grave miscarriage of justice and a violation of fundamental human rights.
According to him, Adio—who was reportedly the complainant in the case had no criminal charges against him, yet was remanded by a Magistrate Court in Ekiti State.
Babatunde alleged that the case, which initially involved a complaint of cyberbullying and unlawful distribution of private content, was improperly handled during court proceedings.
He claimed that the focus shifted away from the original complaint, resulting in the unexpected detention of Adio alongside the defendants until August 4, 2026.
Reacting to the situation, NANS has directed its Ekiti State chapter and relevant stakeholders to begin mobilization for peaceful demonstrations.

Planned protest locations include the Ekiti State High Court, the Magistrate Court, and the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, with demands centered on justice and the immediate release of the former student leader.
In a separate open letter addressed to the Ekiti State Governor, Chief Judge, and Attorney-General, NANS further alleged irregularities in the handling of the case.
The association accused judicial and prosecutorial authorities of bias, claiming that the proceedings lacked neutrality and due process.
NANS also called for the immediate recusal of the presiding magistrate, reassignment of the case to another judge, and a comprehensive investigation into the conduct of officials involved.
The association warned that failure to address these concerns could lead to formal petitions being filed with the National Judicial Council and other regulatory bodies.
As of the time of this report, the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice has not issued an official response to the allegations.
NANS reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian students, emphasizing that it will not remain silent in the face of perceived injustice.
