LaLiga president Javier Tebas has called on FIFA president Gianni Infantino to resign following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, accusing him of poor leadership and controversial decisions during the tournament.
Spain secured their second World Cup title after edging Argentina 1-0 in the final in New York, but Tebas said the competition was overshadowed by FIFA’s handling of several issues.
He criticised the use of extended hydration breaks, arguing they were unnecessary in air-conditioned stadiums and were introduced mainly for commercial purposes. Tebas also questioned the decision to stage a musical performance during the final.

The Spanish football chief further cited the controversy involving Folarin Balogun’s red card and subsequent suspension review as another example of what he described as FIFA’s mismanagement.
According to Tebas, football’s governing body has prioritised its own interests over the game, insisting Infantino’s tenure should come to an end.
FIFA also faced criticism over several changes to the tournament’s traditional format, with reports claiming UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin boycotted the World Cup final in protest.
The Balogun controversy intensified after reports suggested United States President Donald Trump appealed to Infantino to review the striker’s suspension, which was later overturned.
