Fire Outbreak Hits 14-Room Building in Kwara, Four Rooms Affected -

A fire outbreak triggered by a power surge has damaged parts of a 14-room residential building in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

The incident occurred on Monday at about 2:03 p.m. at No. 40 Elesinla Compound, off Agbo-Oba Road, within Ilorin West Local Government Area.

According to the spokesperson of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, the fire was caused by a power surge that ignited combustible materials in one section of the building.

He explained that the affected structure is a storey building consisting of about 14 rooms, with four rooms impacted by the fire.

“Upon arrival, firefighters swiftly commenced operations and successfully contained the fire by 2:50 p.m., preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building and nearby properties,” Adekunle stated.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that the incident was linked to electrical fluctuations, which sparked the blaze within the affected rooms.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, urged residents to prioritize safety by installing standard electrical systems and surge protection devices in their homes.

He also advised property owners to carry out regular inspections and maintenance of electrical wiring, avoid overloading power outlets, and promptly report fire incidents to emergency responders.

Muhammed reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and property through rapid response and continuous public awareness on fire safety measures.
