Argentina captain Lionel Messi has shared his thoughts ahead of his country’s highly anticipated clash with Spain in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the encounter as one that will be fiercely contested.
The Inter Miami forward spoke after inspiring Argentina to a 2-0 victory over England in the semi-finals on Wednesday, a result that secured La Albiceleste’s place in Sunday’s title decider.

Reflecting on the challenge ahead, Messi praised Spain as one of the strongest teams in world football, highlighting the quality of their players and their distinctive style of play.
“They are a tremendous team, with outstanding players. They play excellent football,” Messi said after the semi-final victory.
The Argentine captain noted that Spain have built a football identity over many years, making them formidable opponents in major tournaments.
“I know the Spanish side well, and they have a style of play they have developed over many years,” he added.
Messi also pointed to Spain’s Barcelona contingent, saying the club remains close to his heart after spending most of his legendary career there.
“Several of the squad play for Barca, a club that means a great deal to me and that I still keep up with,” he said.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner expects little to separate the two sides when they meet in the World Cup final.
“It will be a special World Cup final, and obviously, I expect it to be very closely matched,” Messi concluded.
Argentina will be aiming to lift another World Cup trophy, while Spain will be looking to reclaim football’s biggest prize in what promises to be a thrilling final.
