
The Taraba State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on cult-related activities following the arrest of an 18-year-old student found in possession of an illegal firearm in Jalingo, the state capital.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Victor Mshelizah, the incident was reported on July 14, 2026, at about 11:00 p.m. by the management of Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau Institute for Koranic Memorization.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the arrest stemmed from a dispute between two students. During the altercation involving the school’s Senior Prefect, Usman A.
Usman, the suspect an 18-year-old from Sansani in Gassol Local Government Area was allegedly discovered with a mini revolver pistol without ammunition.
Police authorities disclosed that the firearm was intended to intimidate another student involved in the disagreement. Officers from the GRA Division swiftly moved in, arresting the suspect and securing the weapon.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to obtaining the firearm from another student identified as Akilu Alhassan, who is currently on the run.
The police have since launched a manhunt to apprehend Alhassan and other individuals suspected to be linked to cult activities within the institution.
The Commissioner of Police in Taraba State, Morkwap Sebastian Dongshal, has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation.
Reaffirming the command’s commitment to tackling cultism and illegal possession of firearms, Dongshal urged parents, school authorities, and community leaders to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
The police also assured residents of continued efforts to safeguard lives and property while maintaining peace and security across the state.
