Argentine football legend reportedly predicted he would score what later became known as the “Goal of the Century” ahead of his country’s historic 1986 FIFA World Cup quarter-final clash against England.
This revelation was made by his former masseur, Salvatore Carmando, in a recent interview published by FIFA, as Argentina and England prepare to face off once again in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Recounting events leading up to the iconic June 22, 1986 encounter at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Carmando disclosed that Maradona had expressed strong confidence about delivering a remarkable performance.
“Before the match, he told me, ‘I have to score an amazing goal today. I don’t know how exactly, but somehow I have to do it,’” Carmando recalled. “After he scored his second goal, he came up to me, hugged me, and said, ‘I told you I’d do it and I did.’”
Maradona went on to score twice in Argentina’s 2-1 victory over England. His first goal, controversially scored with his hand, became famously known as the “Hand of God.” However, it was his second goal — a stunning solo run past multiple English players — that earned global acclaim as the “Goal of the Century.”
Carmando, who worked with Maradona for decades, revealed that their relationship extended beyond club football.

The Argentine captain personally ensured his inclusion in the national team’s World Cup delegation.
“In January 1986, Diego told me, ‘Get everything ready — we’re going to the World Cup.’ And so we went to Mexico together,” he said.
Reflecting on the upcoming 2026 World Cup semi-final between Argentina and England, Carmando described it as a historic moment that revives memories of one of football’s most iconic rivalries.
Argentina and England have met twice at the World Cup since 1986 — in 1998 and 2002 — but their latest encounter carries renewed emotional and historical significance.
Carmando also offered a lighthearted remark about the controversial “Hand of God” goal, joking, “Everyone says he scored it with his hand, but that’s not true — he scored it with his head.”
Paying tribute to the late football icon, he described Maradona as “a wonderful man” who impacted countless lives.
“Men like Diego no longer exist,” he added.
Maradona remains widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, with his legacy continuing to inspire generations across the globe.
