
The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested two suspected cultists in connection with a violent incident that claimed the life of a Niger Delta University (NDU) student in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
The victim, identified as 20-year-old Ebube Jonathan, a 200-level Management Science student, was reportedly attacked along Kabaka Street on Tuesday afternoon. According to police, the student was assaulted by unidentified attackers and later died from his injuries after being confirmed dead by medical personnel.
Following the incident, operatives of the Amassoma Police Division launched a swift operation that led to the arrest of two suspects. Authorities identified them as a 24-year-old 300-level Fine and Applied Arts student of NDU and a 21-year-old male, who were allegedly found mobilising to carry out a retaliatory attack.

During the operation, police recovered two locally made pistols, two rounds of live 9mm ammunition, and substances suspected to be illicit drugs.
The Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling cult-related violence and other criminal activities across the state. He warned individuals involved in criminal acts to desist or face the full weight of the law.
The police also appealed to residents to continue providing timely and credible information that would assist security agencies in preventing crime and maintaining peace.
Cult-related violence has remained a recurring security concern in Amassoma, home to the Niger Delta University, with rival groups frequently linked to deadly clashes that have threatened the safety of students and residents.
