United States President, Donald Trump, has stirred fresh controversy at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup after publicly questioning the credibility of referee Raphael Claus, following the red card issued to American striker Folarin Balogun.
Balogun was sent off during the USA’s Round of 32 clash against Bosnia, a decision that sparked widespread debate among fans and analysts. The red card automatically attracted a one-match suspension, ruling him out of the crucial Round of 16 fixture against Belgium.
However, FIFA has since overturned the ban, making Balogun eligible for selection in the next match under head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
Speaking from the White House, Trump revealed that he personally requested FIFA to review the incident, insisting that the referee’s decision was unjustified.

“I watched the play closely, and that was never a foul,” Trump said. “It wasn’t even an infraction. The referee’s decision shocked everyone.
When you look into his past, it raises questions.”
He further emphasized Balogun’s importance to the team, describing him as one of the United States’ key players and expressing disbelief at the initial ruling.
The reversal of the suspension has sparked mixed reactions globally, with some praising FIFA’s decision while others raise concerns about external influence in football officiating.
As the tournament progresses, the incident continues to fuel conversations about fairness, refereeing standards, and the intersection of politics and sports on the global stage.
