Firefighters in Kwara State successfully averted what could have been a major disaster after a petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) developed a mechanical fault in Ilorin, the state capital.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning around 9:40 a.m. at Madi Junction along the Oko-Olowo Expressway.
According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the tanker experienced a mechanical failure while in transit, which escalated when the tank detached from the truck during an attempted repair by the driver.
The detachment led to a significant leakage of the highly flammable fuel, raising serious concerns about a possible explosion.
In a statement released by the agency’s spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, emergency responders acted swiftly to contain the situation.

“The team ensured strict safety compliance throughout the operation and maintained full fire protection coverage until the transfer was completed,” the statement noted.
Fortunately, the operation was concluded without any fire outbreak, casualties, or damage to property.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, commended the firefighters for their professionalism and prompt response, describing their actions as crucial in preventing a potentially catastrophic incident.
He also advised tanker operators to prioritize regular vehicle maintenance and urged motorists to promptly alert emergency services in the event of fuel-related incidents.
Authorities emphasized that timely reporting and adherence to safety measures remain essential in safeguarding lives, property, and the environment.
