Fear gripped residents of Tse Orhungul, near Yogbo in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, after a violent attack allegedly carried out by armed herders left one person dead and another critically injured.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening following a dispute over cattle grazing on a maize farm close to the settlement. According to local sources, some youths discovered cattle feeding on crops and seized one of the animals, taking it to a security post in Yogbo to compel the owners to discuss compensation for the damaged farmland.
While the youths were still at the post, the suspected herders entered the village and encountered two brothers, Verse and Terkimbir, working on their farm behind the settlement. Witnesses said the attackers assaulted the brothers with machetes and swords before fleeing the scene.
Verse sustained critical machete cuts and was rushed to a medical facility. A source later confirmed that he did not survive the injuries. His younger brother, Terkimbir, also suffered multiple wounds but is reported to be in stable condition after receiving treatment.

Residents noted that the family had faced a similar tragedy earlier this year. Their younger sister was allegedly attacked in March and remains under medical care.
The attack has heightened anxiety in the community, where locals have repeatedly raised concerns over recurring clashes involving suspected armed herders.
Attempts to get an official response from the Benue State Police were unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, had not responded at the time of filing this report.
