The death of a Rwandan inmate at the Kuje Correctional Centre has prompted an investigation by the Nigeria Correctional Service amid allegations of medical negligence and poor inmate welfare.
The deceased, identified as Benjamin Relasss, reportedly died while awaiting trial, leading authorities to dispatch an investigative panel to the facility. Sources familiar with the inquiry alleged that preliminary findings raised concerns about the medical care provided to the inmate before his death.
According to the sources, investigators discovered discrepancies between statements reportedly made by the prison’s medical officer and records maintained by the facility’s clinic. The records allegedly indicated that the inmate had previously received medical attention at the correctional centre.

The investigation has also brought renewed attention to healthcare conditions within the facility. Sources claimed that another critically ill inmate was recently transferred to a hospital for treatment, while concerns have been raised about the level of support available to prisoners requiring urgent medical care.
In addition, inmates reportedly expressed concerns over the transfer of a fellow prisoner known for advocating improved welfare conditions within the correctional centre. Some sources alleged that the move was intended to discourage criticism of the facility’s management, although no official confirmation has been provided.
The allegations come despite existing directives from correctional authorities requiring officials to ensure that inmates receive adequate medical treatment and care.
Officials of the Nigeria Correctional Service had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of filing this report. The ongoing investigation is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding Relasss’ death and whether any administrative or disciplinary actions will follow.
