The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into a tragic boat accident in Benue State that claimed the lives of 11 passengers.
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., led a team of investigators to Wadata along the River Benue, where the incident occurred, for an on-the-spot safety assessment and fact-finding mission.
According to the bureau, the visit is aimed at gathering firsthand information from survivors, witnesses, community leaders, and local water transport operators to determine the cause of the accident and strengthen safety measures on inland waterways.

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, reportedly commended the swift response of the investigation team and urged the NSIB to maintain a stronger presence in the state to improve safety awareness and reduce recurring water transport risks along the River Benue.
Speaking during the visit, Badeh expressed condolences to the families of the victims and described the tragedy as a painful reminder of the importance of strict adherence to safety regulations on waterways.
He emphasized that many marine accidents can be prevented through improved safety education, proper operational practices, and stronger collaboration between regulators, operators, and local communities.
“We remain committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure safer navigation across Nigeria’s inland waterways,” he said.
The NSIB team also engaged with residents, boat operators, and representatives of the Boat Operators Association in Wadata, where they collected eyewitness accounts and insights into operational challenges in the area.
The bureau added that findings from the visit will contribute to its ongoing investigation and guide future safety recommendations aimed at preventing similar tragedies.
