Brazil and Morocco opened their World Cup campaigns with a 1–1 draw at the MetLife Stadium, in a match defined by Morocco’s early control and a moment of brilliance from Vinícius Júnior.
Morocco strike first after dominant start
Morocco made a bright and assertive start, pressing Brazil high and forcing errors in possession. Their pressure paid off in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari capitalised on a defensive miscommunication between Alisson Becker, Gabriel Magalhães and Marquinhos. Saibari lifted a composed finish from outside the box over the advancing goalkeeper to give Morocco a deserved lead.
The African side continued to dominate possession and territory, registering a flurry of attempts on goal and unsettling a disjointed Brazilian defence. By the half-hour mark, Morocco had produced double-digit shots, underlining their control of the game.
Vinícius responds with individual brilliance
Despite Morocco’s dominance, Brazil found a way back into the contest in the 35th minute through Vinícius Júnior. The Brazil forward collected a pass from Bruno Guimarães inside the area, cut inside with trademark agility, and fired a powerful shot beyond Yassine Bounou.
It was a reminder of Vinícius’ growing importance for Brazil, especially on a night when clear chances were otherwise limited.

Morocco miss chances as Brazil improve after the break
Morocco continued to threaten before half-time, with Brazil fortunate not to fall further behind. Lucas Paquetá came closest to turning the match around before the break, forcing a sharp save with an acrobatic effort.
After the interval, Brazil—coached by Carlo Ancelotti—gradually gained control. With former Brazil greats including Ronaldo Nazário, Kaká and Roberto Carlos watching on, the five-time champions showed more composure but still struggled to create clear openings.
Raphinha came closest to a winner late on, narrowly missing a dangerous cross flashed across the goalmouth, as both sides began to tire in the heat.
A draw that raises questions for Brazil
The result preserves Brazil’s remarkable unbeaten record in World Cup opening matches dating back over nine decades, while Morocco remain without a win in their opening fixture at the tournament.
However, concerns remain over Brazil’s overall performance. While Vinícius Júnior provided a decisive spark, Brazil were frequently second-best in midfield and exposed defensively for long periods—issues that will need addressing if they are to challenge for a sixth World Cup title.
