
A fire outbreak was recorded on Thursday evening in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, after a child reportedly ignited combustible materials while playing with a lighter.
The incident occurred around 5:08 p.m. at a three-bedroom apartment located at Aduagbemi Street, behind the Uniform Company, off Asa Dam Road.
According to the Kwara State Fire Service spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, preliminary findings revealed that the child had set pieces of paper ablaze using the lighter.
The burning materials later spread to nearby flammable items, triggering the fire.

Residents reportedly raised the alarm after noticing the flames had already intensified. Firefighters responded promptly to the distress call and successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building and nearby properties.
One room in the apartment was affected by the incident.
Reacting to the situation, the Director of the State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, urged parents and guardians to keep matches, lighters, and other ignition sources out of children’s reach.
He also emphasized the importance of constant supervision and educating children on the dangers of playing with fire.
He further advised residents to install basic fire safety equipment in their homes and to report fire incidents immediately, noting that early intervention significantly reduces damage and potential loss of life.
