Residents of Apa Local Government Area in Benue State are angry after soldiers allegedly assaulted and disarmed youth volunteers mobilising to strengthen community security.
The incident happened in Adija community days after three farmers were killed in Ikobi community. Both areas have faced repeated attacks by suspected armed herders in recent months.
According to local sources, the volunteers had gathered in Ologo and Asaba villages to discuss security concerns and possible protection measures. They were reportedly intercepted by soldiers while returning to their communities.
During the encounter, local vigilante commander Olowo Otache and his younger brother were allegedly beaten and injured. The two men were taken to General Hospital, Ugbokpo, for treatment. Residents said the soldiers also confiscated locally made firearms belonging to some of the volunteers.

The incident sparked protests, with youths temporarily blocking the Otukpo–Oweto Federal Highway to demand better security and protection for vulnerable communities.
Youth volunteer Adu Aboh said residents are increasingly worried about the frequency of attacks and feel exposed despite repeated calls for intervention. Another resident, Energy Onoja, noted that volunteers had previously worked with the police to support community safety and warned that the incident could undermine those efforts.
Residents also raised concerns about growing insecurity along the Apa–Agatu corridor, where several communities have faced attacks, displacement, and destruction of livelihoods. Ofu Adu of Ochumekwu community alleged that security agencies are often informed before attacks but responses sometimes come too late.
Community leaders have called on the Federal Government, security agencies, and the Benue State Government to strengthen protection, investigate the allegations, and restore public confidence. The Nigerian military had not issued a statement as of press time.
