The Abia State Police Command has arrested two suspects for allegedly attempting to kidnap a two-week-old baby in Umuahia, the state capital.
The suspects, identified as Nzubechi Chinagorom, 24, and Chinonso Chibundu, 25, both residents of Olokoro in Umuahia South Local Government Area, were apprehended following the incident, which occurred on May 25, 2026.
According to police authorities, Chinagorom allegedly entered the residence of a 32-year-old nursing mother and attempted to forcefully take away her newborn baby girl. A struggle reportedly ensued between the suspect and the child’s mother, during which the woman was assaulted and stabbed with a kitchen knife.
The police said the baby fell and sustained injuries during the confrontation, while the second suspect allegedly remained outside the house, acting as a lookout.
Following a distress call from the victim, security operatives launched a search and later arrested the two suspects at a nearby bus stop. They were reportedly found consuming substances suspected to be hard drugs at the time of their arrest.
The injured mother and her baby were rushed to a medical facility for treatment and have since recovered.
