Tottenham Hotspur manager Tottenham Hotspur boss Roberto De Zerbi has sparked debate after commenting on captain Cristian Romero’s decision to travel to Argentina instead of staying with the team for their decisive Premier League clash against Everton.
Spurs are currently fighting to secure their Premier League status, sitting 17th on the table and just two points above the relegation zone rivals West Ham, heading into a high-stakes final-day fixture against Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Romero, who has been sidelined with a knee injury since April and ruled out for the rest of the season, reportedly flew to Argentina to watch his boyhood club Belgrano face River Plate in a crucial domestic fixture, rather than remaining with the squad during their survival battle.
Reacting to the situation, De Zerbi stated that “not all leaders are the same,” while emphasizing that some players showed stronger commitment by staying with the squad during preparations.

He added that the decision for Romero to continue his rehabilitation in Argentina was made jointly with the club’s medical staff.
The Tottenham coach, however, made it clear that his focus remains on the squad available for the Everton game, stressing the importance of playing with “character, spirit, and pride” in what he described as a “final” for the club’s season.
Romero, who joined Spurs in 2022 and signed a long-term contract extension until 2029, has faced increasing scrutiny from supporters, raising fresh questions about his long-term future at the club.
As Tottenham prepare for their decisive fixture, attention now turns to whether they can secure Premier League safety amid growing tension both on and off the pitch.
