
A wave of anger swept through Obosi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State after a mob partially set ablaze a building allegedly used as a kidnappers’ hideout following the rescue of a medical doctor, Dr. Edwin Emegakor, and four other victims by security operatives.
Dr. Emegakor, the Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital in Nkpor, was abducted on May 7, 2026, from his hospital and regained freedom on May 10 after spending three days in captivity.
According to the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Anambra State, Dr. Princeton Okam, the rescue operation was carried out by the Rapid Response/Anti-Kidnap Squad of the Nigeria Police Force, Awkuzu Unit, during a fierce gun battle with the kidnappers.
The operation resulted in the death of one police officer, while two others sustained injuries. The victims were successfully rescued alive, and the doctor has since reunited with his family in stable condition.
Shortly after the rescue, angry residents stormed the suspected hideout and set parts of the building on fire before security operatives intervened to prevent total destruction.
A viral video from the scene showed rooms allegedly used to detain victims, as well as a shrine discovered within the premises, raising further suspicion about the nature of activities carried out there.
The discoveries fueled outrage among residents, who believe the building may have served as a hub for organized criminal operations.

Community members have called on the Anambra State Government to demolish the structure completely and conduct a thorough investigation to uncover all individuals connected to the alleged crimes.
Residents also expressed growing concern over increasing cases of kidnapping and vehicle theft in the Mgbuka-Obosi area, urging authorities to strengthen security presence and take proactive steps to protect lives and property.

n a joint communiqué signed by Dr. Princeton Okam and Dr. Ifeanyi Obiaeli, the association commended security agencies for their bravery, condoled with the police over the fallen officer, and pledged support towards the medical treatment of the injured officers.
The association also renewed its call for improved security measures and reiterated support for the establishment of state policing as a long-term solution to rising insecurity.
As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the incident, while operatives of the state security outfit are expected to assess the property as investigations continue.
