
No fewer than 30 people have been killed following a deadly ambush by suspected bandits along the Magami–Dansadau highway in Zamfara State.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday evening, targeted commuters and motorists travelling between Magami and Gusau, one of the major routes in the state frequently plagued by insecurity.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the spokesman of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard, Malam Abubakar Gummi, said the attackers opened fire on several vehicles in a coordinated assault, causing panic and heavy casualties.

According to him, those killed included 21 civilians, eight local hunters, and one member of the community protection guard.
Gummi explained that security personnel and local vigilantes engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle shortly after the attack.
He added that several of the assailants were also reportedly neutralised during the confrontation, although the exact number of casualties among the bandits was not disclosed.
The Magami–Dansadau highway has remained one of the most dangerous routes in Zamfara South due to recurring attacks by armed groups targeting travellers, farmers, and traders.
Security sources disclosed that the bodies of the victims had been evacuated to nearby health facilities, while injured survivors are currently receiving medical treatment.
As of the time of filing this report, the Zamfara State Government had yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
