
A gas explosion on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, caused panic in the Orile-Iganmu area of Lagos State, leaving a gas attendant injured and destroying two shops in the process.
The incident occurred on Adeleye Street in the Doyin area when a gas cylinder was being refilled at one of two shops located at the frontage of a partially demolished building.
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the explosion was reported at about 12:23 p.m., and emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes.

Firefighters from the Sari Iganmu and Ajegunle fire stations were deployed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
The explosion triggered a fire that quickly engulfed the first shop before spreading to an adjacent shop within the same premises.
Both shops sustained significant damage before the fire was brought under control.
The gas attendant involved in the refilling process sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
His current condition has not been disclosed.
Authorities confirmed that no deaths were recorded in the incident.
The fire service also noted that prompt intervention by emergency responders helped prevent further destruction in the area.
Investigations have since commenced to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
