The Oyo State Government has scrapped its monthly environmental sanitation exercise and introduced a daily clean-up system aimed at maintaining cleaner communities and improving public health across the state. The new initiative, announced on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, is part of measures to make cleanliness a consistent responsibility for residents.
Speaking during a press briefing in Ibadan to mark his first 100 days in office, Aderinto said environmental health officers will now be on the streets every day to monitor compliance with sanitation rules. According to him, residents are expected to keep their surroundings clean at all times rather than waiting for the end-of-month exercise.
To strengthen the program, the government has recalled 930 environmental workers, including sweepers, vanguards, and waste handlers, and deployed them across more areas for improved coverage. Two new compactor trucks have also been provided with the support of Governor Seyi Makinde to enhance waste collection and disposal across the state.

Aderinto added that sweepers will now work twice daily to keep roads and public spaces cleaner, while all environmental workers have been enrolled in the state health insurance scheme. The ministry has also launched the Oyo Soro Soke Environmental Whistleblower platform, accessible via mobile apps and WhatsApp, allowing residents to report environmental offences in real time.
In a further step toward sustainable waste management, the ministry has introduced a waste separation system in government offices and is collaborating with private partners to construct modern public toilets across the state.
