The explosion was immediately followed by sporadic gunfire as the assailants targeted those attempting to flee.
“It was a coordinated attack. The explosion went off and then they opened fire on innocent people. Many died on the spot, while others were critically injured,” a local security source said.
Initial reports indicate that at least 18 bodies were recovered shortly after the incident, while search-and-rescue efforts continued for those still missing in nearby bushes. Several injured victims were also said to have been evacuated to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Residents of surrounding communities have since fled their homes over fears of further attacks, as reports suggest the insurgents may still be operating within the area.
The latest assault highlights the ongoing security challenges in parts of northeastern Nigeria, particularly in Borno State, which has remained a hotspot of insurgent activities despite sustained military operations.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies were yet to release an official statement on the incident.
