NANS Kicks as Abductors of UNIJOS Student Demand N30m
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the abduction of a University of Jos (UNIJOS) student, John Arum, whose captors are reportedly demanding a ransom of N30 million.
Arum was said to have been kidnapped while travelling to Kaduna, in yet another incident highlighting the worsening insecurity across the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NANS National President, Olushola Oladoja, expressed deep concern over the development, describing it as both disturbing and unacceptable.
He noted that evidence of the student’s captivity has surfaced publicly, revealing the harsh and inhumane conditions under which he is being held.
“It is disturbing and highly challenging to acknowledge that such inhumane treatment can be meted out by one human to another,” Oladoja said.
He further criticised what he described as the slow and inadequate response from security agencies and relevant authorities, stressing that such delays only embolden criminals and heighten public fear.

“What is more perplexing is the apathy and weak response of our security institutions and local authorities at both state and federal levels,” he added.
The student body described the incident as a reflection of the growing vulnerability of Nigerian students to criminal activities, warning that no student should be subjected to such cruelty or left at the mercy of kidnappers.
NANS has called for the immediate deployment of intelligence and security resources to ensure Arum’s safe rescue. The association also demanded transparency from authorities, urging them to provide regular updates on efforts being made.
In a strong move, NANS issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Federal Government and the Plateau State Government to act decisively or face nationwide student protests.
“As an organisation, our demands are clear. Failure to meet them within the stipulated timeframe will compel Nigerian students to embark on a nationwide solidarity protest and shutdown of socio-economic and academic activities,” the statement warned.
The association reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare and safety of students across the country, stressing that it would not remain silent in the face of rising insecurity.
