Former England captain Wayne Rooney has tipped the upcoming Premier League showdown between Manchester City and Arsenal as a potential title-deciding fixture.
Arsenal currently sit top of the table with a six-point lead but have played two more games than Manchester City, making Sunday’s encounter at the Etihad Stadium a crucial moment in the title race.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney suggested that Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side may have a psychological advantage heading into the fixture due to their experience in high-pressure title battles.
According to BBC Sport, Rooney said City’s composure and quality of personnel could make the difference in such a high-stakes game.
“I think City will have the edge on that, just purely the manager and players they’ve got. They will be able to stay a little calmer than the Arsenal players,” he said.
Despite Arsenal’s strong position, recent results have increased pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side. City’s convincing 3-0 win over Chelsea came shortly after Arsenal suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth, tightening the tension at the top.
Rooney warned that a dip in form at this stage of the season could severely affect confidence and momentum.

“When you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking where’s the next goal, the next win going to come from? That negative mindset really has an impact on your performance,” he explained.
He further described the Etihad clash as one that could determine the direction of the title race.
“Whoever wins will be favourites to win the league,” Rooney added, noting that a draw would still be a valuable result for Arsenal.
Rooney also advised Arsenal to adopt a more pragmatic approach against the defending champions, stressing discipline over flair.
“They need to be tough to break down, make sure there’s no gaps between the lines and try to hit them on the break. Whether fans like that type of football or not, they have to do anything to stop City winning,” he said.
He concluded that Arsenal must remain defensively solid and mentally strong to contain City’s attacking threat.
With both sides fully aware of what is at stake, the Etihad Stadium clash is widely expected to be a defining moment in the Premier League title race, where mentality and experience could prove just as decisive as technical quality.
