In a bid to enforce environmental sanitation laws, the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has arrested and fined 108 residents for illegal waste dumping in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The offenders were caught by OGWAMA’s enforcement team dumping refuse on roadsides, medians, and other public spaces, violating the state’s waste management regulations.
They were arraigned before various customary courts and fined, serving as a stern warning to others.
Speaking on the development, OGWAMA’s Special Adviser to the Governor, Farook Akintunde, said:

“It is unfortunate that we have to resort to this measure to stop residents from indiscriminate waste disposal. Despite repeated sensitisation and encouragement to hand over their waste to PSP operators for proper disposal, many have ignored these guidelines.”
Akintunde added that the government would continue the enforcement exercise until compliance improves, highlighting the risks of indiscriminate waste disposal:
“Dumping waste indiscriminately is not safe. It can cause flooding and contaminate groundwater, especially during the rainy season.
We will not allow such practices to undermine the state’s environmental progress.”
He urged residents to adhere strictly to waste disposal guidelines or face prosecution, stressing the government’s commitment to maintaining environmental cleanliness and safeguarding public health.
