Nollywood actress Peju Johnson has called out what she described as hypocrisy among Nigerians regarding romance scenes in local films.
Johnson recently attracted criticism on social media over a romantic scene in her latest movie, Right Thing. Reacting to the backlash in an interview with Saturday Beats, the actress said many viewers apply double standards when judging Nigerian movies.
According to her, some Nigerians freely watch and enjoy romantic scenes in foreign productions, including films from South Africa and other countries, but quickly condemn similar scenes when they appear in Nigerian movies.

Johnson added that the criticism has not affected her personally, stressing that she was simply doing her job as an actress. She also noted that the controversial scene does not define her character or who she is as a person.
Highlighting the film’s broader message, Johnson explained that the story addresses the issue of some gay men in Nigeria who marry women without revealing their sexuality. She said such situations can lead to deception and emotional harm for the women involved.
The actress urged men in such situations to stop misleading women, adding that not every woman would be willing to accept that reality.
