A deadly drone strike in northern Iraq has killed a French military officer and wounded several other soldiers, raising alarm over escalating tensions in the region.
French authorities confirmed that Arnaud Frion, a Chief Warrant Officer, was killed during the attack near Erbil. Six other French soldiers, deployed to provide counter-terrorism training, sustained injuries in the assault.
The attack occurred just hours after another strike targeted an Italian military base hosting NATO personnel in the same northern Iraq region, signaling a potential surge in coordinated attacks on Western forces.
Reacting to the tragedy, French President Emmanuel Macron described the drone strike as “unacceptable,” paying tribute to Frion, who “died for France” while serving in the fight against Islamic State.

Macron emphasized that France’s military presence in Iraq is strictly aimed at countering terrorism and warned that ongoing regional conflicts should not justify attacks on coalition forces.
Security sources in Iraq report that Iran-backed Shi’ite militias have intensified drone and missile strikes on Western interests in recent days, raising fears of further escalation amid the broader Middle East conflict.
France maintains hundreds of troops in the Erbil region as part of the international coalition against ISIS. In response to the growing tensions, Paris has also started deploying naval assets, including an aircraft carrier strike group, to strategic waters such as the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, and Strait of Hormuz, to safeguard maritime routes and support allies.
The drone attack comes amid a volatile period in the Middle East, where ongoing conflicts have already killed thousands, displaced millions, and destabilized global financial markets.
