Chelsea captain Reece James has signed a new six-year contract with Chelsea FC, reaffirming his commitment to the club where he began his football journey.
The 26-year-old defender, who joined Chelsea’s academy at the age of six, said he wants to spend what he describes as the “peak years” of his career at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking after signing the new deal, James expressed strong belief in the club’s future.
“I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes,” he said in a statement released by the club.
The England international has made more than 200 appearances for Chelsea, winning five major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Over 50 of those appearances have come while serving as the team’s captain.
James said he is optimistic about the direction of the club under its current leadership and coaching staff.
“I’m excited for the future under this ownership, the sporting directors, the coach and all the staff, and hopefully we will lift many more trophies together over the coming years,” he added.

Although Chelsea secured the UEFA Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup last season, the club has struggled to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title since a US-led consortium took over from former owner Roman Abramovich in 2022.
The Blues currently sit fifth in the league with nine matches remaining. Their European hopes also suffered a setback after a heavy 5–2 defeat to Paris Saint‑Germain in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 clash earlier this week.
Chelsea’s sporting directors, Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, described the contract extension as a significant moment for the club.
“On behalf of ownership and everyone connected to Chelsea, it is a proud moment for all of us to have Reece extend his contract,” they said. “He is the leader of this team, both on and off the pitch.”
After battling several injury setbacks in recent seasons, James has regained fitness and form, making 35 appearances across all competitions this campaign his highest number of games since the 2021/22 season.
The Chelsea captain is also expected to play a key role for England national football team, with manager Thomas Tuchel likely to name him as his starting right-back at the upcoming World Cup.
