An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court has sentenced two men to 15 years in prison each for the death of a 12-year-old housemaid they brutally flogged.
The convicts, 22-year-old painter Edidiong Edem and 21-year-old mechanic Alex Effiong-Etim, were handed the jail terms by Justice Abiola Soladoye following a plea bargain on an amended charge of involuntary manslaughter.
The court heard that the young girl was beaten after she allegedly spilled food while performing her household chores, angering the men.
In a fit of rage, Edem and Effiong-Etim repeatedly flogged her with a broom, inflicting injuries that later became infected with tetanus and eventually led to her death.

Justice Soladoye ruled that the prison term would begin from the date the men were first remanded in a correctional facility.
The offence reportedly occurred in January 2022 at Military Estate in the Eleko area of Lagos State. The prosecution, led by state counsel Oluwaseun Adewoye, explained that the case contravened Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Initially arraigned on February 25, 2022, Edem and Effiong-Etim had pleaded not guilty but later accepted the plea bargain, resulting in the amended charge.
The judgment underscores Lagos State’s commitment to holding adults accountable for child abuse and ensuring justice for vulnerable victims.
