The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after holding consultations with political stakeholders across the state.
The announcement was made on Monday in a statement issued by Nuhu Salihu Anka. According to the statement, the decision came after extensive discussions with political leaders, elders and supporters throughout Zamfara State, and was taken in the interest of stability, progress and sustainable development.
Lawal explained that his defection was largely influenced by the prolonged internal crisis, leadership disputes and structural challenges affecting the PDP at both national and state levels. He said the persistent issues within the party had created uncertainty and distractions that could undermine effective governance and the delivery of democratic benefits to citizens.
The governor emphasized that his primary responsibility remains the peace, security and development of Zamfara State. He added that aligning with a political platform that promotes greater unity and stronger cooperation with the Federal Government had become necessary.
The statement further revealed that the final discussions leading to the decision were held at the Government House in Gusau, with the meeting coordinated by the deputy governor alongside senior government officials and key political stakeholders.

Lawal expressed gratitude to members and supporters of the PDP for their support over the years but noted that prevailing political realities and unresolved internal challenges within the party made his departure unavoidable.
By joining the APC, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening unity, enhancing security, accelerating development and ensuring that Zamfara State benefits from closer collaboration with the Federal Government.
The state government also urged residents, political leaders and other stakeholders to remain calm and support the transition as the state enters what it described as a new political phase focused on unity, stability and development.
