Residents of Gbugbu in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State were gripped by fear on Sunday night after suspected gunmen reportedly invaded the community.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the town shortly after 8:00 p.m., firing gunshots indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee indoors. The incident marks another episode in a string of violent attacks that have heightened insecurity in parts of the state.
A resident, who requested anonymity, said the assailants shot continuously across the community. “There is no confirmed information yet about casualties or abductions,” the source said. “They came into the community after Isa’i prayers and began shooting non-stop. Everyone has remained indoors.”

The attack has further intensified concerns in Edu, Patigi, Ifelodun and Oyun local government areas, where residents say incidents of violence have increased in recent weeks. Just days earlier, gunmen were reported to have attacked Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama LGA, leaving several people dead and others abducted.
Security operatives, however, thwarted a separate attempted assault in Share, Ifelodun LGA, following a coordinated operation involving multiple agencies.
In response to the escalating insecurity, the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, recently launched Joint Task Force Operation Savannah Shield aimed at tackling criminal activities in Kwara and parts of neighbouring Niger State as authorities work to curb the growing threat.
