Former Brazil international Caio Ribeiro has alleged that match officials have shown special treatment to Argentina captain Lionel Messi during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, Ribeiro argued that referees have been too lenient with the veteran forward, particularly during the group stage of the tournament.
The ex-Brazil star pointed to an incident in Argentina’s match against Algeria, claiming Messi should have been sent off for what he described as a dangerous tackle.

According to Ribeiro, the officials failed to apply the same standards they would have used for other players.
“Messi is protected by the refereeing. He should have been sent off for that dangerous tackle in the group stage against Algeria,” Ribeiro said during an appearance on Brazilian television.
He added that there have been several moments in the tournament where the referees appeared more forgiving towards the Argentine captain than they would have been with other footballers.
Despite the criticism, Messi has enjoyed an outstanding World Cup campaign, playing a pivotal role in Argentina’s run to the final. The 39-year-old has scored eight goals and provided four assists, making him one of the tournament’s standout performers.
Argentina will face Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final as Messi looks to inspire his country to another global title, while the refereeing of the match is expected to attract close attention following Ribeiro’s remarks.
