Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the immediate closure of the Onitsha Main Market following the continued observance of the illegal Monday sit-at-home order by traders.
The closure, which is initially for one week, was announced as part of the state government’s efforts to curb what it described as economic sabotage and restore normal commercial activities across the state.
Government sources explained that the decision followed repeated warnings to traders, market leaders, and residents to disengage from the sit-at-home directive, which authorities insist has no legal backing.
According to the government, the persistent shutdown of businesses every Monday has continued to cripple economic activities in Anambra State, particularly in Onitsha Main Market, which serves as one of the largest commercial hubs in the country.
Officials further warned that if traders fail to fully reopen the market by the end of the one-week closure, the shutdown would be extended to one month.
Such an extension, the government noted, could have serious economic consequences not only for traders but also for supply chains across the South-East and other parts of Nigeria.
A senior government official stated that the action was necessary to restore law, order, and economic stability, stressing that fear-driven compliance with illegal directives must not be allowed to dictate public life.

The state government also issued a stern warning to market unions, transport operators, and individuals suspected of enforcing or promoting the sit-at-home order, saying anyone found aiding or abetting the practice would face legal and regulatory sanctions.
Security agencies have reportedly been placed on alert to ensure compliance with the directive and to provide protection for traders willing to open their shops.
While some traders welcomed the government’s decisive action, describing it as long overdue, others expressed fear and uncertainty, citing security concerns and past incidents linked to defiance of sit-at-home orders.
In response, the Anambra State Government reassured residents and traders that adequate security measures are being put in place to protect lives and property, urging all stakeholders to cooperate in the interest of economic survival and stability in the state.
The coming days will be crucial, as the decision by traders to reopen or remain closed may determine the next steps by the government and the economic direction of Anambra State.
