Ohanaeze Announces Annual Igbo Adoration, Thanksgiving Day

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has officially declared the last Saturday of every January as Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day, urging Igbo people at home and in the diaspora to observe the day as a unifying spiritual event.

The announcement follows consultations with the Igbo College of Bishops, which requested a shift from Sunday to Saturday to avoid conflicts with regular church services.

Senior clerics, including Archbishop David Onuoha of the Owerri Anglican Province and Archbishop Sosthenes Eze of the Enugu Anglican Province, led a delegation to the National Executive Committee (NEC) to make the appeal.

The NEC approved the request, reversing an earlier resolution by the Ohanaeze Imeobi. The Imeobi will be formally notified of the change at its next meeting.

In a statement, the President-General of Ohanaeze, Senator Azuta Mbata, described the day as “a moment of collective gratitude to God for His enduring mercies and grace upon the Igbo nation, despite the challenges faced over the decades.”

Churches across Igbo land have been urged to observe the maiden edition of the event on Saturday, January 31, 2026, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon, with prayers, adoration, and thanksgiving.

Mbata called on all Igbo people to participate wholeheartedly in making the day a landmark for unity and spiritual reflection.
