Media personality, Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly known as Daddy Freeze, has weighed in on the ongoing debate comparing Grammy-winning Afrobeats star Wizkid to the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Daddy Freeze dismissed the comparison, insisting that Fela’s legacy goes far beyond music and cannot be measured solely by commercial success or global recognition.
According to him, Fela was not just an entertainer but a fearless activist who dedicated his life to confronting injustice, oppression and bad governance in Nigeria.
Speaking during a video broadcast, Daddy Freeze argued that any comparison between Wizkid and Fela must take into account Fela’s political courage and personal sacrifices.
He noted that Fela openly challenged successive governments, endured arrests, harassment and imprisonment, and consistently used his music as a tool for social change.

He stressed that before Wizkid can be likened to Fela, the singer would need to show a similar willingness to confront authority and stand up for civil rights.
Daddy Freeze recalled that Fela was once released from prison only because authorities feared public outrage if he died in custody.
He described the late musician as a freedom fighter rather than a troublemaker, adding that Fela’s activism and music were inseparable.
According to him, discussing Fela without acknowledging his struggles, protests and influence on Nigeria’s socio-political landscape would be incomplete.
The comments come amid renewed public debates following recent exchanges involving Wizkid and members of the Kuti family, reigniting conversations about legacy, influence and what truly defines greatness in Nigerian music history.
