Norway’s national football team received a rousing reception from tens of thousands of supporters after returning home from their memorable FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, despite falling short in the quarter-finals.
The Scandinavian nation welcomed the players to Oslo on Monday, with an estimated 90,000 fans gathering outside the Royal Palace to celebrate the team’s historic achievement. Norway reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time before their journey ended with a 2-1 extra-time defeat to England on Saturday in Miami.
Supporters filled the palace square as the players arrived, cheering loudly while the squad performed their now-famous “Viking Row” celebration, which became a symbol of their remarkable run during the tournament.

Crown Prince Haakon also joined the celebrations, leading the crowd with a drum. The heir to Norway’s throne had travelled to Miami to support the team during the quarter-final clash and was among those welcoming the players home.
Captain Martin Ødegaard expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, describing the reception as unforgettable and praising the unity shown by fans throughout the World Cup.
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, who finished the tournament with seven goals, returned to Norway earlier in the day. However, he was unable to attend the public celebration because he had another flight to catch. Before departing, Haaland shared photos on social media showing him leaving the plane carrying a stuffed raccoon holding a bottle.
Although Norway’s dream of reaching the semi-finals came to an end, the team’s impressive performances and historic quarter-final appearance have earned widespread praise, with supporters celebrating what is widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest achievements in international football.
