England defender Jarell Quansah has been handed a two-match suspension by FIFA following his dismissal during the Three Lions’ Round of 16 clash against Mexico.
Quansah received a red card in England’s dramatic 3–2 victory after a VAR review upgraded his challenge on Mexico’s Jesús Gallardo to serious foul play.
The incident occurred at the Azteca Stadium, where the young defender had been deployed in an unfamiliar right-back role.
FIFA’s disciplinary committee confirmed that the sanction will rule Quansah out of England’s upcoming quarter-final fixture against Norway, as well as a potential semi-final tie should the team progress further in the tournament.
The decision comes amid reports that England’s Football Association had considered appealing the suspension, especially following a recent case where a similar red-card punishment involving United States forward Folarin Balogun was overturned.

According to FIFA regulations, players found guilty of serious foul play are subject to a minimum of a two-match ban, leaving little room for leniency in Quansah’s case.
His absence adds to England’s growing defensive concerns, particularly on the right flank. The team had already been without Tino Livramento due to injury, while Reece James was ruled out earlier in the competition.
Primarily a centre-back at club level, Quansah’s temporary shift to right-back had been a tactical adjustment by England’s coaching staff—a move that now leaves the squad further stretched as they prepare for the crucial knockout stages.
England will now have to reshuffle their defensive setup as they aim to maintain their World Cup campaign momentum without one of their key defensive options.
