The Nigerian Senate was thrown into mourning on Thursday following the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District and chaired the Senate Committee on Works.
He passed away at the age of 64 after a brief illness, a National Assembly source confirmed.
Senator Mpigi began his political career in the House of Representatives, first elected in 2011 and re-elected in 2016.
He later moved to the Senate in 2019 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). During the 9th Assembly, he led a joint Senate committee investigating crude oil theft in the Niger Delta, a critical role as the nation grappled with declining oil revenues and pipeline vandalism.
The news of his passing reached the Senate chamber during Thursday’s budget defence session, casting a sombre mood over lawmakers.

Senator Mohammed Onawo of Nasarawa South paid tribute to the late senator, urging colleagues to honour his legacy. Lawmakers observed a minute of silence in his memory.
Tributes also flowed from the House of Representatives. Akin Alabi, Chairman of the House Committee on Works, described Mpigi as a “dear friend” and expressed his condolences on his official X handle.
Senator Mpigi’s death comes just three months after the passing of Senator Okey Ezea of Enugu North, highlighting a growing concern over the recent loss of serving lawmakers in the 10th National Assembly.
“May his gentle soul rest in peace,” colleagues prayed, remembering his contributions to Nigeria’s legislative process and development projects.
