Rivers Police Officer Arrested for Shooting Colleagues -

A police officer has been arrested after allegedly shooting two colleagues during a joint security operation in Port Harcourt.

Inspector Victor Okus, attached to the 17 Police Mobile Force (PMF), was taken into custody following the incident at Next Cash and Carry Supermarket in Trans-Amadi on Sunday afternoon.

The victims, Inspectors Ibrahim Sani and Daniel Dauda of the 14 PMF, were on duty alongside military personnel at the time of the shooting.

Both officers were rushed to Nopsam Hospital for medical attention. Inspector Sani, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head, later died, while Inspector Dauda, injured in the neck, remains under treatment.

The body of Inspector Sani has been deposited at the Military Hospital mortuary in Port Harcourt for preservation and further examination.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Inspector Okus and stated that he would face an orderly room trial before being formally charged in court.

The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, describing the act as “reprehensible” and assuring the public of accountability.

A spokesperson for the command, Grace Iringe-Koko, emphasized the importance of responsible firearm handling by officers on duty to prevent such tragedies.

She extended condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Inspector Sani, reiterating the police’s commitment to professionalism and justice.

Preliminary reports suggest that Inspector Okus has been evasive during interrogation, and senior police sources dismissed claims that the shooting was accidental. The investigation is ongoing.
