The Delta State Police Command has warned Nigerians about the fraudulent registration of SIM cards using unsuspecting individuals’ personal information, cautioning that such practices could expose victims to criminal investigations and legal consequences.
The warning was issued by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Bright Edafe, in a security advisory shared on Friday, November 6, 2026.
According to Edafe, some SIM registration agents allegedly collect customers’ personal details under the guise of registering their phone numbers but secretly use the information to register additional SIM cards without their knowledge.
He explained that these SIM cards could subsequently be sold to criminals and used for activities such as financial fraud, kidnapping and ransom-related transactions.
The police spokesman warned that individuals whose National Identification Numbers (NINs) are linked to such SIM cards could face difficulties proving their innocence if the numbers are used to commit crimes.
He therefore urged Nigerians to visit the official service centres of telecommunications providers, including MTN and Globacom, to verify all phone numbers registered against their NINs.

Edafe advised subscribers to immediately request the removal of any unfamiliar phone numbers linked to their identities.
He stressed that the verification exercise should not be limited to individuals who registered their SIM cards through unofficial agents, as additional numbers could have been fraudulently linked to their identities without their knowledge.
The police spokesman also urged Nigerians to exercise caution when sharing personal information during SIM registration and to patronise only authorised telecommunications service centres.
He noted that the command was investigating a related case but declined to disclose further details because investigations were ongoing.
The Delta State Police Command reiterated the importance of protecting personal information, warning that criminals could exploit stolen identities to carry out serious offences.
