The incident occurred at about 09:30 AM on Wednesday when two of them engaged in fisticuffs following a misunderstanding over space within the market.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has announced the arrest of Onu Simeon in connection with the death of trader Ifeanyi Chukwu, who was killed during a dispute over selling space at Utako Market, Abuja.
Newsmen earlier reported that Ifeanyi was killed following a fight that broke out between him and another trader at Utako Market.
The incident occurred at about 09:30 AM on Wednesday when two of them engaged in fisticuffs following a misunderstanding over space within the market.
FCT Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh confirmed Simeon’s arrest in a statement on Wednesday.
She stated that when police officers arrived at the scene, they found Ifeanyi lying unconscious on the ground. He was immediately taken to NNPC Hospital, Utako, where a medical doctor confirmed his death.
Adeh said, “Preliminary investigations revealed that Onu Simeon of Anguwan Biggy, Jabi Daki Biyu, and one Ifeanyi Chukwu of Kuchigoro, Lugbe, had earlier engaged in a dispute over a space to display their goods for sale.
“The disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Ifeanyi Chukwu suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness.
“His remains have been deposited at a general hospital for further investigation, while the suspect, Onu Simeon, is currently in police custody as investigations continue. Further updates will be communicated in due course.”
The police spokesperson added that the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, has urged residents to adopt peaceful means of resolving disputes.
The CP emphasised that violence often leads to tragic and unpredictable consequences, and reassured the public of the Command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order in the FCT.
The CP also encouraged residents to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activities or security concerns via the FCT Police Command emergency lines.
