
The Nigerian film industry has been plunged into mourning following the death of veteran actress and director Oby Kechere. Best known for her iconic portrayal of the eccentric “Ms. Koi Koi” in the 2002 comedy classic Aki na Ukwa, Kechere’s passing marks the end of an era for Nollywood fans.
The National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Uche Agbo, officially confirmed the news in a statement released on Saturday. According to the guild, the actress passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026, following a courageous battle with a prolonged illness.
In the official announcement, Agbo expressed deep sorrow, noting that Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere, who served as the Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter, was a “committed professional” whose contributions to the growth and unity of the guild would never be forgotten.

She officially entered Nollywood in 2001, making an immediate impact with her debut in the popular August Meeting film series. While she appeared in numerous productions, it was her role alongside Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme in Aki na Ukwa that cemented her status as a household name.
Beyond acting, she was a dedicated professional behind the scenes and a pillar of the creative community. The DGN has extended its deepest condolences to her family and loved ones as fans and colleagues begin sharing tributes online, remembering her sharp comedic timing and her dedication to the craft of storytelling.
