
Team Nigeria delivered an impressive performance at the 24th African Athletics Championships, finishing the competition with a total of 12 medals after a dominant display in the women’s 4x400m relay on the final day.
The Nigerian quartet of Esther Okon, Toheebat Jimoh, Jecinter Lawrence and Patience Okon-George successfully defended the country’s title in the event, clocking 3:29.25 to claim gold ahead of Ethiopia and Kenya.
Nigeria controlled the race from the opening leg and crossed the finish line comfortably ahead of their rivals, securing the country’s fourth gold medal of the championships.
The result helped Team Nigeria conclude the tournament with four gold, five silver and three bronze medals, finishing fourth overall behind Kenya, South Africa and Ethiopia on the final medal standings.
Kenya emerged as overall winners with 17 medals, including six gold, four silver and seven bronze medals. South Africa also claimed six gold medals but finished second with fewer overall medals, while Ethiopia placed third with five gold medals.
Nigeria’s other medal on the final day came from Rosemary Chukwuma, who won silver in the women’s 200m after posting a time of 23.60 seconds.

Chukwuma enjoyed a remarkable outing at the championships, winning three medals in total after earlier claiming gold in the women’s 4x100m relay and silver in the women’s 100m event.
World record holder Tobi Amusan also played a key role in Nigeria’s success, winning gold in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 12.83 seconds.
Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m relay team made up of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson and Patience Okon-George added another gold medal after finishing in 3:16.44.
The women’s 4x100m relay team of Rosemary Nwankwo, Jennifer Chukwuka, Rosemary Chukwuma and Miracle Ezechukwu also secured gold with a time of 42.94 seconds.
In the field events, Oyesade Olatoye won silver in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 69.60m, while Divine Oladipo also claimed silver in the discus event. Nigeria’s men’s 4x100m relay team contributed another silver medal after finishing in 38.70 seconds.
Adaobi Tabugbo clinched bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 13.26 seconds, while Chidera Ezeakor earned bronze in the men’s 100m after clocking 10.318 seconds.
Obiageri Amaechi also added to Nigeria’s medal tally with a bronze-medal performance earlier in the competition.
