The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized counterfeit packaging materials valued at over ₦200 million during raids on five shops at Old Court Road Market in Aba, Abia State.
The operation uncovered fake labels, corks, packs and outer packaging bearing the names of popular brands, allegedly intended for the production and distribution of counterfeit alcoholic beverages and other products.
Affected brands include Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, Lord’s Dry Gin, Imperial Blue, Goya Oil, Chelsea, Squadron and Seaman’s Aromatic Schnapps.
According to NAFDAC, its operatives faced threats and resistance from traders during the operation, making it difficult to evacuate the seized materials. The owners of the five shops were reportedly absent, and the premises were sealed to prevent interference with the remaining items.
The agency has invited the market union chairman, who pledged to help secure the sealed shops and identify the owners for further investigation.
The operation forms part of efforts to combat counterfeiting and protect consumers from potentially dangerous products.
