A High Court in Gombe has sentenced a 25-year-old man, Hassan Mohammed, to death by hanging for killing his former wife, Halimatu Sadiya-Adamu.
The judgment was delivered on Wednesday by Justice Abdulhamid Mohammed-Yakubu of High Court No. 2 in Gombe after the court found the defendant guilty of culpable homicide.
According to the prosecution, the couple had earlier separated following persistent disagreements in their marriage, which eventually led to their divorce.
However, the situation escalated months later when Mohammed reportedly approached his former wife, asking her to reconcile and remarry him.
The tragic incident occurred on March 25, 2025, in Falangaya village in Dukku Local Government Area. The court heard that the victim refused the defendant’s request to remarry him, which allegedly sparked a heated confrontation between them.

During the altercation, Mohammed was said to have attacked the woman with a knife, inflicting fatal injuries that led to her death.
The Director of Public Prosecution in the state, Abubakar Kungudo, told the court that the offence contravened Section 221 of the Penal Code Law.
He added that six witnesses testified during the trial, giving accounts of what they saw at the scene, while the knife allegedly used in the attack was presented as evidence.
Although Mohammed pleaded not guilty to the charge, his defence counsel, Habib Alkali, cross-examined the prosecution’s witnesses before presenting the defendant as the sole witness for the defence.
In his ruling, Justice Mohammed-Yakubu held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt after reviewing the testimonies of witnesses, exhibits presented before the court, the defendant’s statement, and findings from the police investigation.
The judge subsequently convicted Mohammed of culpable homicide and sentenced him to death by hanging as stipulated under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law, noting that the evidence clearly established that he killed his former wife after she rejected his request to remarry him.
