Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Odega has openly criticized the current state of Nollywood, describing many of today’s productions as “watery” and lacking substance.
Speaking in a recent interview, Odega expressed concern that the industry is prioritizing quantity over quality, producing films that fail to engage
According to Odega, Nollywood once thrived on strong storytelling, compelling characters, and authentic performances.
“We used to tell stories that resonated with people, but now, it feels like the focus is only on making money fast,” he lamented.

The actor urged filmmakers to invest more in scriptwriting, production quality, and actor development to restore the industry’s credibility both locally and internationally.
“Our audience deserves films that leave an impact, not just something that fills streaming platforms,” he added.
Odega’s comments come at a time when Nollywood continues to expand globally, with Nigerian films and series gaining recognition on streaming platforms.
Industry insiders say his critique highlights a growing debate about the balance between commercial success and artistic integrity in modern Nigerian cinema.
