The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tin Can Island Port Command, has intercepted two 40-foot containers carrying illicit drug-related substances worth an estimated ₦3.67 billion at Tin Can Island Port, Lagos.
The seizures, made in September 2026, involved cannabis-infused cookies and gummies, as well as other cannabis-related substances concealed among imported used vehicles and automobile spare parts.
According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Oscar Ivara, the first container was intercepted on September 2, 2026. A joint physical examination by officers of the NCS and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) uncovered 890 packs of Delta-8 cannabis-infused cookies and gummies weighing 598.08 kilogrammes.
The container also contained two used vehicles: a 2008 Mercedes-Benz and a 2012 Nissan Infiniti.
A second container was intercepted on September 16, 2026. Examination revealed 1,207 packages of Cannabis indica weighing 603.75 kilogrammes, with an estimated street value of ₦3.62 billion.
Other items found in the second container included two used Toyota Sienna vehicles, two used Toyota Corolla vehicles and used engine spare parts.

Ivara stated that the combined weight of the seized substances across both containers was 1,201.83 kilogrammes, with an estimated total street value of ₦3.67 billion.
He noted that concealing illicit substances among imported vehicles and automobile spare parts highlighted the methods smugglers use to move prohibited items through the country’s seaports.
The Customs spokesperson attributed the successful interceptions to the vigilance of officers and effective collaboration with the NDLEA.
He added that the seized substances would be formally handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation in line with established procedures.
The operation, according to the command, forms part of ongoing efforts to prevent drug smuggling through Nigeria’s seaports and protect public health and national security.
